Defense delivered for the Neshannock High girls basketball team on Monday.
The Lady Lancers turned the ball over 20 times but it held Laurel in check defensively in a 43-27 WPIAL Section 1-3A home win.
"It wasn't pretty, but we got the job done," Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. "I thought we turned it over uncharacteristically tonight, but that's a credit to Laurel.
"We only gave up 27 points, that's a great job defensively."
Neshannock (6-0 section, 12-0 overall) finished the first half of section play with a two-game lead over Mohawk (4-2, 7-4) and Riverside (4-2, 9-3).
"We're happy with where we are," Grybowski said. "We definitely have to make some corrections. We got sloppy with the ball; there's some things we have to get better at."
Bella Burrelli led all scorers with 14 points for the Lady Lancers and Carmie Matarazzo was next with 11. Brie Dean chipped in with eight markers.
Burrelli added eight rebounds, four steals and three assists for the winners, while Hannah Haswell was next with six boards and three assists. Dean delivered three steals and three assists. Matarazzo was 5 of 7 from the field.
Makenna Collins and Brianna Reeher tossed in six points apiece to lead Laurel, which turned the ball over just 12 times. Caroline Gibson was next with five.
The Lady Lancers were 18 of 37 from the field, compared to 12 of 25 for the Lady Spartans.
"That's our season low in shots this year," Grybowski said. "It was a methodical game. Defensively, we were taking away the attack mode."
Union 37, Propel Andrew Street 11
The Lady Scots snapped a 13-game losing streak dating back to last season with an easy Section 1-1A home win over Propel Andrew Street.
"We've had a struggle this year," Union coach Brian Heaney said. "It's nice for the girls to get a win and see a smile on their face. They've been working hard and it's nice to see them enjoy a win."
Shayy Johnson netted a team-high 13 points for the Lady Scots (1-4, 1-11) and LaDaisja Fitzpatrick was next with eight.
Propel Andrew Street is 0-5, 1-11.
Union led just 4-2 after one quarter before pushing the lead to 16-2 at the half.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 65, Shenango 36
The Lady Chargers made 11 3-pointers in a Section 1-2A road win over the Lady Wildcats.
Shenango (2-4, 4-9) has lost four of its last five games.
Madison Harden paced the Lady Wildcats with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Jocelyn Nagy netted 19 points to lead Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (5-1, 10-2).
Beaver Falls 55, Ellwood City 36
The Lady Wolverines fell behind 31-12 at the half and couldn't recover in dropping a Section 1-3A home matchup to the Lady Tigers.
Natalia Greco garnered a team-high 13 points for Ellwood City Lincoln (1-5, 4-10).
Island Bradley led all scorers with 24 points for Beaver Falls (3-3, 8-5).
Oil City 61, Wilmington 38
The Lady Greyhounds were outscored 38-22 in the second half in a District 10, Region 2-3A home loss to Oil City.
Keegan McConaughy paced Wilmington (2-4, 4-7) with 11 points and Meredith Glavach was next with eight.
The Lady Greyhounds trailed 13-8 after one quarter and 23-16 at the half.
New Castle vs. South Side Beaver
This nonsection game set on the Lady Rams' home floor was postponed.
Laurel tops foe
The Spartans recorded six pinfall victories to capture a 48-30 nonsection road win over Blackhawk.
Isaac Duffy (132), Jacob Moore (138), Robbie Hetzer (145), Sam Moore (170), Russell Cyphert (182) and Mitch Miles (285) scored pinfall wins for Laurel (2-2).
Blake Lahr (120) and Nick Moore (126) claimed forfeit wins for the Spartans.
