Chatham University coach David Richards gives directions during a game last night at Westminster College.

David Richards and the Chatham University men’s basketball team will travel to Naperville, Illinois, on Friday to make their NCAA Division III Tournament debut at North Central.

The New Castle native’s Cougars (19-9) will take on the host Cardinals in the opening round. This is the first time in school history that a team sport has made it to the NCAA Tournament.

Chatham (19-9) earned an automatic bid to the championship by virtue of a 64-61 win over Westminster in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Saturday. The North Central Cardinals (22-5) earned an automatic bid after winning the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament last weekend at Augustana College.

North Central will be making its fourth straight appearance in the national tournament and its 11th all-time. The Cardinals advanced to the national semifinals in 2013.

Richards is in his first season as Chatham’s head coach.
