Laurel's Caroline Gibson drives to the basket during a home game against Shenango last night.

The Laurel High girls basketball program made history last night.

The Lady Spartans took charge early and cruised to a 76-28 WPIAL Section 1-2A home win over Shenango.

Laurel (13-1 section, 17-4 overall) locked up a share of the section championship with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-1, 16-4). It’s the first section crown for the Lady Spartans, according to coach Matt Stebbins.

“It’s a huge win and a huge program win for us,” Stebbins said. “It’s a great accomplishment.

“Everybody played a ton and it was a great team victory.”

Laurel also won its 11th straight game, tying a school record.

“These girls are playing hard and playing very good basketball at the right time,” Stebbins said.

The Lady Spartans led 23-12 after the first quarter and 45-16 at recess. They pushed the buffer to 63-23 going to the final frame.

“Even the subs that came in, the younger girls, we preach defense and buckling down on the defensive end,” Stebbins said. “It was just amazing. From the starters all the way down to the freshmen, they all did a phenomenal job on the defensive end.”

Caroline Gibson garnered a game-high 29 points for Laurel. Faith Gibson, Caroline’s sister, and Mikyla Slater both scored 10 points each for the winners.

Kassidy Peters produced 15 points for Shenango (3-11, 6-16).
