Neshannock High graduate Marissa Kirkwood wasn’t bothered by a two-stroke deficit entering the final round.
Or a four-shot differential in the early stages of that round.
Kirkwood, a Neshannock High graduate and daughter of Mike and Nadine Kirkwood, regrouped to capture a one-shot victory in the Donna Andrews Invitational at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, Va.
The tournament is a 54-hole stroke play event honoring Donna Andrews, the major champion and Virginia Sports Hall of Famer who grew up at the host Boonsboro Country Club. It’s open to any female player with a handicap index of 14.4 or less.
Kirkwood will be a senior at Kent State University in the fall. She rallied past Lauren Greenlief for the win.
Kirkwood began to turn things around by recording a birdie on each of the final three holes on the front nine. The deficit was trimmed to one stroke by the No. 12 hole.
An eagle on No. 12 by Kirkwood put her in a tie with Greenlief for first. Kirkwood played the remaining holes at even par, while Greenlief was one over.
Kirkwood fired a final-round 68.
