Colin McQuiston

Shenango's Colin McQuiston scores on a layup over Laurel's Kobe DeRosa during the fourth quarter of a home game last night.

Colin McQuiston made certain that the Shenango High basketball team ended its WPIAL Section 3-2A season on a high note last night.

McQuiston, a junior guard, poured in a career-high 40 points to lead the Wildcats past visiting Laurel.

McQuiston also dished out eight assists and came up with six steals to help Shenango finish fourth in the section at 7-5, 10-11 overall.

Reis Watkins had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats.

“Colin had a good night,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said of his son. “There were a couple of times I thought he might have forced it, but overall, he gave us a great game.

“This builds some momentum for the playoffs,” McQuiston said. “We knew it was going to be a battle. This is a rivalry game for both teams and obviously since we’re going to the playoffs, I knew they would love to knock us off.”

The margin stayed within 6-8 points most of the way until Shenango opened it up a bit down the stretch. Ryan Perretti fouled out in the fourth quarter.

“One of our problems has been foul trouble,” McQuiston said. “If we want to be successful, we have to stop reaching so much. You can’t send a team to the line 26 times and expect to win.”

McQuiston mentioned Ryan Lenhart and his brother, Josh Lenhart, as playing key roles in the game.

“They both came in and gave us quality minutes when we needed it, and Ryan Lenhart got us five rebounds,” Bob McQuiston said. “They both get after it and play hard.”

Marcus Haswell led Laurel (3-9, 6-14) with 22 points.

Union 63, Western Beaver 53

The Scotties finished in fourth place in a strong Section 1-1A with the road victory.

Union is now 10-4, 16-5. The Scotties finished behind Vincentian (12-2) and Nazareth Prep and Cornell (both 11-3).

“It’s a tough section,” Scotties coach Mark Stanley said. “We won 16 games, so we’re hoping to get a decent seed for the playoffs.”

Seth Pinkerton tickled the twine for 19 points and also had four steals for Union. Mike Flowers added five rebounds. Vince Fuleno chipped in with 16 markers and Sean Louis added 13 tallies.

Western Beaver slipped to 4-10, 7-14.

Lincoln Park 74, Neshannock 53

The Lancers finished third in Section 1-3A playoff with the road loss.

Neshannock is now 8-4, 16-5. Lincoln Park won the section crown at 11-1, 18-3.

Chris Scott led the Lancers with 17 points and Max McHale and Spencer Perry added 11 apiece.
