Sam Haswell

Laurel's Sam Haswell moves the ball past a South Side defender during Friday night's game.

The Laurel High boys basketball team suffered a tough overtime defeat last night.

The Spartans lost to South Side Beaver 63-56 in a WPIAL Section 3-2A meeting at the Laurel court.

Laurel slipped to 2-5 in the section, 3-10 overall. South Side Beaver is now 5-2, 11-4.

Sam Haswell paced the Spartans with 24 points and eight rebounds and Luke Barber added 21 markers, including five 3-pointers each. Logan English put up 28 points for the Rams.

Laurel was outscored 12-5 in the extra period. South Side Beaver missed a 3-pointer to potentially win the game at the end of regulation, but made 9 of 11 free throws to seal the win in OT after Haswell opened with a lay-in bucket.

OLSH 79, Shenango 68

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, ranked third in Class 2A according to the Sunbury Daily Item, got all it could handle from the Wildcats.

OLSH is now 7-0, 13-1. Shenango, battling for one of the four available playoff spots in the section, is 3-4, 5-10.

Colin McQuiston led the Wildcats with 32 points and seven rebounds, followed by Reis Watkins with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Perretti with 11 tallies.

Darren DiMichelle was OLSH’s top scorer with 26 points.

Shenango was within six points late in the game, but Sacred Heart made 8 of 11 free throws down the stretch to cement the win. The Wildcats lost to OLSH 74-28 the first time around.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” said Wildcats coach and Colin’s dad, Bob McQuiston. “But the kids played hard and we were a different team from the one that lost to them the first time around. We made a couple of mistakes and mistakes against a good team like that are going to cost you.

“I thought our effort was great and we proved that we came to play,” he added. “We just came up a little bit short.”

Union 46, Eden Christian 43

The Scotties held on to pull out a Section 1-1A win in a key game for both teams.

Union is now 6-2, 12-3. Cornell is first at 6-1, with the Scotties, Nazareth Prep and Vincentian tied for second. Eden is next at 3-4, 6-7.

Seth Pinkerton led Union with 15 points and seven steals. Sean Louis had six rebounds.

Although the Scotties beat Eden 73-41 the first time the two teams played, Eden was without starters Elijah Manges and Thomas Medure. Both were back last night.

Union trailed by four points with 48 seconds left. Down three with 42 seconds remaining, Vince Fuleno hit a 3-pointer to tie it.

The Scotties went into a press and Pinkerton stole the ball and was fouled with 35 seconds to go. Pinkerton made two free throws and Mike Flowers came up with a steal at the other end and made both charity tosses.

“It was a big game for both teams with playoff implications,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “It was one of those grind-it-out road games. This keeps us in the hunt for the section title.”
