Nadia Huebner

Wilmington's Nadia Huebner looks to make a play with the ball during the second half of a home game against Greenville last night.

The Wilmington girls basketball team struggled on the offensive end in dropping a District 10, Region 4-2A home game to the Greenville, 50-33, on Monday night.

Wilmington (2-6, 7-12) trailed 13-9 after the first quarter and 26-15 at the break.

Keegan McConahy paced Wilmington with 10 points and six rebounds. Nadia Huebner and Meredith Glavach were next with nine points apiece. Huebner also snared seven caroms.

Ellie Kalchthaler collected a game-high 24 points for Greenville (8-0, 15-4).

Wilmington was down by double digits before cutting it to four with around three minutes remaining. McConahy then fouled out and Greenville was able to pull away.

“That’s when the turnovers hit,” Lady Greyhounds coach Rick Holzworth of McConahy’s departure. “It’s the same old story. Our turnovers hurt us and they seemed to multiply when we lost McConaughy.”

Ellwood City 51, Mohawk 36

The Lady Wolverines breathed life into their playoff hopes with a key Section 1-3A home victory over the Lady Warriors.

Ellwood City Lincoln (5-8, 12-9) is tied for fifth in the section with Beaver Falls (5-8, 7-13). Mohawk (6-6, 7-12) is in fourth place. Four teams plus ties that can’t be broken qualify for the WPIAL playoffs.

The Lady Wolverines have one section game remaining, a road tilt with Riverside (2-11, 7-13) on Thursday. The Lady Tigers host Beaver (9-3, 14-4) on Thursday, while Mohawk hosts Neshannock on Thursday and Beaver on Saturday.

Isabella Roth registered 17 points to lead Ellwood City and Natalia Greco tossed in 12.

Paige Julian netted 20 points to pace Mohawk.

Sto-Rox 30, Shenango 29

The Lady Wildcats came up short in a Section 1-2A home matchup with the Lady Vikings.

Shenango (3-9, 6-14), trailing  30-29, missed a shot with 15 seconds left and Sto-Rox (6-6, 9-10) grabbed the rebound. The Lady Vikings went to the foul line and missed both freebies with seven seconds to go.

The Lady Wildcats had one final chance to win the game but couldn’t get a shot off in time.

“The girls played their hearts out,” Shenango coach Kevin Zona said. “We were never rattled. We fell short but I’m extremely proud of the effort.

“We were locked in and focused. It was the tempo and pace we wanted. We outworked them for the 50-50 balls and we were very patient, too.”

Addie George led Shenango with 13 points.

 Al’aysha Washington scored 21 points for Sto-Rox.

Laurel 76, New Brighton 18

Caroline Gibson poured in a career-high 42 points to key the Lady Spartans (12-1, 16-4). Laurel can clinch at least a share of the Section 1-2A title with a win over Shenango on Thursday night.

Gibson, a senior point guard, had five 3-pointers on the night.

“Caroline was unconscious tonight,” Laurel coach Matt Stebbins said. “She didn’t miss. She was still able to distribute the ball really well and play great defense.”

Sewickley Academy 58, Union 26

The Lady Scots slipped to 2-10 and 2-17 with the road loss.

Sewickley is 7-4, 10-6.

Nina Casalandra led Union with nine points and Madison Wynn added eight.
