Service should take place on Memorial Day
Editor, The News:
I was very disappointed that the Veterans Council decided to change the day of the Memorial Day service at the courthouse.
I think because of the change, it affected attendance — not only the number of people in the viewing audience, but also the number of service members and veterans that usually attend this event. People usually celebrate Memorial Day on Memorial Day.
I know that there are many events taking place in the county covering Memorial Day, but can’t the services be coordinated so that all may be accommodated? Even the front of the program had Monday, May 27, 2019, printed on it.
Ruth Fairchild delivered a poignant speech. What a gem she is, right here in New Castle — the national Surgeon General of the VFW! The young lady, Shelby Nicholson, gave a beautiful rendition of the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The New Castle High School Band was terrific as always, playing the service anthems, taps, and accompanying the marchers to the Penny Bridge to toss the wreath in the river in commemoration of those lost at sea.
I hope nobody showed up Monday morning at the courthouse expecting a service to honor all of our war dead, because they would have been sorely disappointed.
God bless those who gave some and those who gave it all.
Also, the veterans groups are looking for a few good younger men to help carry on the memories of those who gave it all.
