Editor, The News: Two state senators said the conditional appointment of a county treasurer who would not seek election to the office would "send a clear signal to the voters of Lawrence County that they and they alone will choose the next county treasurer." In fact, they and they alone elected the former treasurer, three times. Perhaps the position should be appointive, rather than elective. And perhaps there should be qualifications for the office. The idea of an independently elected county treasurer was to provide a system of checks and balances. Unfortunately, in Lawrence County, the checks didn't always balance. Lynn Slovonsky New Castle
