A Cranberry Township woman was killed when she fell down a ravine at McConnell’s Mill State Park.
Lawrence County deputy coroner Samuel Teolis said Cheryl Goebel, 58, died at the scene.
The accident occurred around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, which was Goebel's birthday.
Goebel and her husband had gone to Breakneck Bridge to take photos. As they were looking over the bridge, she dropped her camera, according to Teolis.
Her husband went down the south side of the 20-foot ravine to get it for her and told her to stay at the top. However, she went down the other side, which is very steep and has a cliff, he said, lost her footing and fell into a rocky area of Cheeseman Run.
Her husband told Teolis he had heard a sound and heard her fall and hit the ground.
Teolis pronounced her dead around 9 p.m.
He said Friday morning he did not know the exact injuries that had caused her death. An autopsy was to be performed Friday at Heritage Valley Health System in Beaver County.
The McConnell’s Mill park rangers and Portersville EMS responded to the call.
