The new Walgreens in New Castle is set to open Friday. The store, on Wilmington Avenue between Garfield and Leasure avenues, will open its doors at 8 a.m., according to a company spokeswoman. She said the store will have about 25 employees. Stores average $7.9 million in annual sales, according to a Walgreens fact sheet. New Castle's store will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Pharmacy hours on the weekend will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Walgreens operates 5,401 drugstores in 47 states and Puerto Rico. The New Castle store will be the 64th one in Pennsylvania. During the last five years, the company opened 2,234 drugstores. Fortune magazine ranks Walgreens as the 45th largest company in America. The 15,000-square-foot store was scheduled to open in April, according to Gale Measel, owner of GEM Building Contractors and Developers Inc., the general contractor for the project. One reason for the delay was that a section of the floor had to be replaced, Measel said. "The floor was a factor," said Michael C. Lewis of Visconsi Companies Ltd. of Pepper Pike, Ohio, developer of the store. Delays, he said, "happen typically with construction." "We're definitely excited about getting it opened." Visconsi said he has developed more than 60 Walgreens stores. "New Castle was our first deal in western Pennsylvania." Measel added that delays also were caused by several change orders, which meant paving on the site could not be done from October to April. Walgreens, he said, follows Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regulations on when to pave.
