A Neshannock Township woman escaped injury yesterday in a one-car accident when her van burst into flames.

Brenda Ritt, 46, of 2875 Blews Way, told Neshannock Township police she was driving west on East Maitland Lane. Her vehicle rounded a curve around 2:30 p.m. when an oncoming car approached in her lane.

She swerved to miss it and drove off the road. The van landed in the yard of 419 E. Maitland Lane. Her Ford Aerostar was positioned between a power pole and a ground wire, which somehow sparked a fire.

Police said the other driver did not stop.

The van was engulfed when Neshannock firefighters arrived, and thick, black smoke could be seen throughout the area. The power pole also had flames shooting from the top of it.

The accident briefly disrupted power service as far north as Wilmington Township. Cable television was out of order for a couple of hours.

Police and fire personnel blocked off a quarter-mile section of Maitland Lane from Mercer Road.

Ritt's van was destroyed.
