A Terrace Avenue man is recovering from burns he sustained when his nephew allegedly set his clothing on fire.

The nephew, a juvenile, has been charged as an adult.

New Castle police arrested Jessie Lauderbaugh, 16, of 103 Terrace Ave., in connection with the incident. He is charged with aggravated assault, a felony; and simple assault and terroristic threats, both misdemeanors.

District Attorney John Bongivengo said he approved the city police charging Lauderbaugh as an adult because he allegedly used a deadly weapon.

A deadly weapon is any instrument that could be used in a manner that could cause serious bodily injury or death.

He also noted Lauderbaugh allegedly ran from the scene after the incident.

Although Bongivengo anticipates the teen’s defense attorney will attempt to have him tried as a juvenile, “We will oppose that.”

Police were called around 6 p.m. Monday to the home of Timothy Hall at 33 Terrace Ave., where Hall told them Lauderbaugh had been throwing rocks at his vehicle.

Hall said when he tried to approach Lauderbaugh, the teen ran behind Hall’s house.

As Hall chased him around the back of his house, Lauderbaugh threw gasoline on him, he told police. He tried to stop Lauderbaugh, but the teen lit his shirt on fire.

Hall told police his entire upper body caught fire, and Lauderbaugh ran.

The teen was arraigned by District Judge Melissa Amodie, who set his bond at $10,000. He was lodged in the Lawrence County jail, pending a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Lawrence County Central Court.

Information was not available about whether Hall was taken to a hospital, and he could not be reached yesterday for comment.

Police said he sustained moderate to severe burns around his neck, and they were photographed.

They said Hall’s shirt had burns and a strong odor of gasoline.
