The man who allegedly confessed to the Aug. 3 Elks Club shooting has been held for court on all counts.
Marcus Quental Best, 24, of 117 N. Jefferson St., remains in the Lawrence County jail. He is charged with one count each of criminal homicide, simple assault, possession of instruments of crime and recklessly endangering another person and two counts of aggravated assault.
He is being held without bail.
New Castle police said Best, arrested Aug. 14, admitted to firing the gun that killed Marcus Smith, 37, who had addresses in Youngstown and on New Castle’s East Side and North Hill.
Police said Best told them he had not intended to kill Smith, but fired a gun into the air and into the ground in an effort to break up a fight.
Smith died of multiple bullet wounds following the fight and shooting in the Elks Club parking lot at the corner of Home and Moravia streets.
Best is represented by attorney Stanley Booker.
