Slippery Rock University

A New Castle native and former Slippery Rock University faculty member who died last month will be remembered by having a room in the school’s renovated Strain Safety Building named for her.

Wilma J. Cavill, a retired SRU emeritus professor of safety management, passed away May 15 at age 88. She had a nearly 60-year affiliation with SRU as a student, student-athlete, gymnastics coach and faculty member.

Upon her retirement in December 2015, the university awarded Cavill an honorary doctorate of public service. At the time of her retirement, she was the longest-serving faculty member in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

Cavill established a scholarship to support safety management majors.

The university yesterday passed a resolution to name the Wilma J. Cavill Student Study Room in her honor.
