Daniel Mayer is the new assistant principal at Shenango High School.

The Rochester resident was approved by the board by an 8-0 vote at a special meeting last night. Board member Joseph Shevetz was absent.

Mayer will be paid $65,900 for the 2007-08 school year.

Since 1995, he has been a high school learning support teacher for the Western Beaver County and Riverside school districts.

Mayer has a bachelor of science degree in special education from Clarion University and a master of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also earned kindergarten to grade 12 principal certification.

According to Dr. Daniel Bell, Shenango’s superintendent, there were 46 applicants for the post. He explained the administration did the initial screening, eliminating those without proper certification or qualifications, then interviewing 20 applicants.

The second round involved 11 people being interviewed by the administration and the board’s three-member personnel committee this week.

Last night, the full board interviewed the three who had made it through the second interview before selecting Mayer.

Mayer replaces Jeff Mathieson, who resigned effective Aug. 1. He went to the Butler school district, where he will be an elementary principal.
