A Neshannock Township man is in jail after police said they caught him breaking into a soft drink machine. New Castle police on patrol around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday spotted Noah Proud, 31, of 162 Upland Drive, standing in front of a 7-Up machine outside Beer 4 Less in the lot of the Cascade Galleria. When Proud saw the patrol car, he ran over to a purple van, then walked to an outside pay phone and tried to make a call, police said. Officers said they found a hammer and pliers on the ground in front of the phone. They noted the lock on the drink machine was damaged and partially drilled and screws from it were on the ground. Proud was arrested and charged with criminal attempt at theft, criminal mischief and possessing instruments of crime. He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa Amodie and is lodged in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $2,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lawrence County Central Court.
