An Ellwood City man was arrested on rape and related charges Thursday for alleged involvement with a 14-year-old.

Ellwood City police have charged Jonathan Michael Burton, 23, of 347 Pittsburgh Circle, with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault, sexual assault and statutory sexual assault.

District Judge Jerry Cartwright arraigned Burton, who was released on his own recognizance. Burton’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Lawrence County Central Court.

In an affidavit, police allege Burton had sexual relations with a teenage girl, according to information they received from the girl and her mother at Ellwood City Hospital.

The alleged offenses are considered crimes under state law because the girl is younger than 16 and the alleged offender is four or more years older than her, according to police.

The girl told police Burton went to her house on May 26 and had intercourse with her while her mother was not at home. The girl said Burton knew her age. Her mother told police that she did not want him hanging out with the girl, police said.

The girl alleged she and Burton were on the front porch and they talked about being together that evening after her mother left.

Her mother told Burton he had to leave when she left the house, but he merely walked around the block and then returned, the girl said.

Burton and the girl saw each other on Memorial Day at the house of a mutual friend, and he made sexual advances toward her there while they were watching a movie, police said.

Police said Burton was starting his first day on the job as a security guard at the hospital Thursday when he was arrested.
