Eric Heckathorne

A New Castle resident died Friday night as the result of an off-road motor vehicle accident in Mahoningtown.

According to state police, the body of Eric Lee Heckathorne Sr., 38, of 708 Sampson St., was found in a wooded area off Montgomery Avenue.

Lawrence County Coroner Russell S. Noga said Heckathorne was driving a dune buggy near a set of railroad tracks when his vehicle struck a two-foot high pump that was covered by weeds. The dune buggy flipped over and caused injuries to Heckathorne’s head and neck. He died Friday night.

Noga said his body was found on Saturday by a group of kids riding dirt bikes in the area. New Castle police responded to the accident.
