New Castle police are investigating the cause of death of a man found outside of a Mahoningtown convenience store.
A passerby reported finding a man lying up against a phone pole outside of the store on Liberty Street around 5 a.m. When police arrived they found that the man, identified as 43-year-old David Lee Ross of North Liberty Street, was deceased, according to police chief Bobby Salem.
Salem said Ross had a bag of food with him and that there were no signs of foul play.
He said an autopsy and toxicology tests are being performed at Heritage Valley Health System to determine the cause of the man's death.
Lawrence County deputy coroner Al DeCarbo, who went to the scene, said there were no obvious signs of any injury, but it was dark outside. He said he is awaiting a report on the autopsy, which was being done Tuesday afternoon.
Salem said that according to a surveillance video the police viewed, Ross had been inside the convenience store about six hours before he was found dead.
