A man died from multiple bullet wounds following a shooting in the Elks Club parking lot this morning.

Marcus Edward Smith, 37, was pronounced dead at Jameson Hospital emergency room at 2:26 a.m. today, according to Lawrence County Coroner Russell S. Noga.

Noga said Smith had been shot “at least” three times — once in the head near his left ear, once in the upper right chest and once in the right arm.

“This will be ruled a homicide,” he said.

An autopsy will be performed today at Beaver Medical Center.

Smith reportedly had addresses of 315 S. Ray St. and 318 Wallace Ave., but authorities said he carried an Ohio driver’s license.

New Castle police chief Bobby Salem said this morning that an officer patrolling  near the Elks Club heard gunfire at 1:49 a.m. today.

The officer saw a crowd of people running from the parking lot of the club  at the corner of Home and Moravia streets. He saw Smith — who had been shot several times — in the parking lot, Salem said.

He said patrols “typically” are in the area of the club at closing time, “just in case something happens.”

The club has been the site of several shootings, he said, noting that Smith’s brother, Chris Smith, was shot five times at that location several years ago. Smith survived his injuries.

The chief said police are still trying to piece together what happened. Witnesses told officers that a fight had broken out and someone started shooting. Some onlookers told police that Smith had been trying to break up the fight, but police said they are still investigating that report.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the city police department at (724) 656-3585.
