An 84-year-old man died and his wife suffered smoke inhalation in a fire Monday morning in Neshannock Township.

Conway Brown was pronounced dead at the scene following repeated attempts by a New Castle police officer to go into the house and find him. His wife, Alvira Brown, was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Information about her condition was not available Monday morning.

Firefighters were called around 1:20 a.m. New Castle policeman James Heaney was the first to arrive at 205 Worthington Ave., where a man and woman were reported to be trapped inside the house.

(Reporter Debbie Wachter Morris is working on this developing story and will have complete details in Monday's print edition of The News.)
