A Shenango Township man was crushed yesterday when his garden tractor fell on him. Paul E. Young, 84, of 28 Reno Lane, was pronounced dead in the garage of his home at 3:50 p.m. yesterday by Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Richard Johnson. Johnson ruled the death accidental and listed the cause of death as chest compression causing asphyxiation. “It was a freak accident,” said Johnson, who noted that Young would have celebrated his birthday on Friday. He said Young had rigged up a system of engine belts, ropes and pulleys in his garage to raise the front end of his tractor so he could work on the engine and blades. “The system just failed,” Johnson said. “One of the belts apparently broke and the tractor came down on him.” Johnson said Young had taken his wife to an appointment at 10 a.m. yesterday, and was supposed to pick her up at 2 p.m. “When he did not show up, she found another ride home,” Johnson said. “She found him under the mower.”
