Police say they caught an Ellwood City teen in the act of burglarized a garage and attempting to steal a vehicle.

State police have charged 18-year-old Andrew Leon Mercado with burglary, criminal trespass, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, 11 counts of criminal mischief, and theft from a motor vehicle.

Police said Mercado allegedly broke windows of 10 vehicles on or near the property of Marks Garage, Lawrence Avenue, Wayne Township. He reportedly damaged windows on the garage door using a tire iron around 6 a.m. yesterday.

He also removed a radio from one of the cars, police said.

A metal door that Mercado allegedly used to access the garage also was damaged, according to police. When he heard police arrive at the scene, he reportedly tried to steal a car from inside the garage, where he was captured.

He was arraigned by District Justice Samuel Battaglia, who set his bond at $15,000. Mercado has since been released on bail.
