MARS — The New Castle High boys track and field team is a Midwestern Athletic Conference champion.
The Red Hurricane claimed the team title with 76 points to Beaver’s 66 yesterday. Mohawk was sixth with 34.
The ’Canes’ LeShawn Huff won the 800 and 1600. Carrington Smith claimed the triple jump.
On the girls side, Shenango took home a second-place finish, paced by field MVP Jillian Hellman.
The Lady Wildcats finished with 53.2 team points, in behind champion West Allegheny with 63.
Hellman took second in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 21/2 inches, and second in the discus with a throw of 100 feet, 10 inches.
Logan Ferrucci also had a strong showing for Shenango. Ferrucci won the 300 hurdles in a time of 48.17, took fifth in the 100 hurdles at 16:48 and then joined teammates Melina Mangino, Keri Lechner and Haley Morgan to take second in the 400 relay. She also joined Angelica Klein, Lechner and Morgan to place fourth in the 1600 relay.
Lindsay Frabotta of New Castle claimed the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 117 feet, 3 inches.
