Robert E. Hartsuff Jr., 87, of 318 Rhodes Place, formerly of Delaware Avenue, passed away peacefully of natural causes Sunday, May 24, 2009 in Jameson Hospital.

Robert was born on Aug. 2, 1921, in New Castle, a son of Robert Earl Sr. and Nellie Giles Hartsuff. Bob, as he was known by family and friends, graduated from New Castle High School in 1940 and matriculated to Youngstown State University, where he earned a bachelors of arts degree in accounting.

He was a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish, St. Mary Church and also attended St. Camillus Church. He was employed for more then 20 years by the New Castle Youth Development Center.

A decorated veteran of World War II, he served with the Navy and was honorably discharged on April 5, 1946 with the Pacific Theater, American Theater, Philippine Liberation and Good Conduct ribbons, and was ultimately awarded the WWII Victory Medal.

He was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 315, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 512.

He leaves his two nephews, Robert K. and Mary McCartt of New Castle, and Daniel T. McCartt, Temple, Tex.; a niece Barbara and David McCann of Clearwater, Fla.; two great-nephews; two great-nieces, and one great great-niece.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Roseltha McCartt and Katherine Hartsuff; and a nephew, Phillip McCartt.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Church. The Rev. Victor M. Molka Jr. will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery with full military honors provided by the New Castle Honor Guard.
