Lawrence C. Godwin, 84, of New Wilmington passed away the afternoon of Nov. 7, 2009, at his home.

Born Aug. 20, 1925, in Mahonington, he was the son of the late Lewis Clark and Elva Merle Dunham Godwin.

He married Ruth W. Moore Godwin on July 12, 1947. She survives in New Wilmington.

Mr. Godwin was an office clerk for Penn Power.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was an aviation storekeeper from 1943 to 1946 on the U.S.S. Hamlin in the Pacific Theater. He was a co-founder of the U.S.S. Hamlin Society, created to reunite comrades of that ship.

Lawrence was a member of American Legion Post 343, Mahoning New Castle Lodge 243, a 32nd-degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle Consistory, a member of the Consistory choir and of First United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Godwin was survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Bill Braatz of Highland, Mich., Beverly and Ron Lintner of Franklin, Pa., and Karen and Dan Monaco of New Castle; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Denise Godwin of Beaver Falls; six grandchildren, Jesse Braatz and Kristin May, both of Michigan, Nicole Heaberlin of New Castle, Danny Monaco of Breckenridge, Colo., Greg Godwin of Cincinnati and Mark Godwin of Beaver Falls; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation is today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, 2429 Wilmington Road, and tomorrow from 10 to 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 135 Decker Drive.

A Masonic service will be conducted today at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the church.

Burial will be in Briar Hill Cemetery.
