John E. Gabriel, 63, of South Fayette Township died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, after surviving cancer for six years. At the time of his death he was surrounded by loved ones.

He was born June 24, 1945, in New Castle to a loving family that included his late parents, Anthony and Mary Gabriel, and late brothers, Ken and Tom.

John was director of the Commission on Human Relations for the City of Pittsburgh from 1973 to 1990. He then served as president of the Pittsburgh Civil Service Commission from 1990 to 1994.

He received a master’s degree in political science from the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from Duquesne University School of Law in 1985.

He was in private law practice with his son, Deron, until the time of his passing.

John is survived by his sons, Deron and his wife, Gina, and Brian and his wife, Clare; their mother, Sharon; was the loving grandfather of Christian, Isabella, Angelina and Maria; devoted brother to Myra Cook of Warren, Ohio; and dear uncle to several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and many dear friends.

Friends will be welcolmed from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Brusco-Falvo Funeral Home, 214 Virginia Ave., Mount Washington.

In New Castle, friends will be welcomed from 10 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St.

A procession will leave the DeCarbo funeral home at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow for a funeral liturgy at noon at St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church, 4 W. Reynolds St.
