James Viggiano, 79, of New Castle, died the morning of Jan. 23, 2009, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Born March 28, 1929, in New Castle, he was a son of Rocco M. and Mary D’Ambrosia Viggiano

He was married to the former Frances Sharshan on Jan. 3, 1962, and she survives.

Mr. Viggiano retired in 1988 from Shenango China after more than 50 years of service. He had been the union president of Shenango China Local 3125 for 35 years.

He was devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his grandchildren and attended all of the events in which they were involved.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and their husbands, Maria A. and Atty. Charles P. Sapienza Jr. of New Castle and Melissa A. and Dr. Christopher A. Enoch of Hermitage; a son and his wife, Michael Viggiano and Dr. Lynn Colaiacovo of New Castle; a brother and his wife, Victor and Charlotte Viggiano of New Castle; and nine grandchildren, Charles III, Alaina, Rachel and Adrianne Sapienza, Aaron and Nicholas Viggiano, and Alexandra, Aidan and Arianna Enoch.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Patsy and Matthew Viggiano, and three sisters, Yolanda Paglialong, Diana Carbone and Almerinda Ruehl.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Monday for St. Joseph the Worker Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Robert Schweitzer will officiate.

Entombment will be in Parkside Mausoleum.
