George Debelak, 86, of 1513 S. Jefferson St. died the morning of Jan. 16, 2009, in Jameson Hospital.

He was born Oct. 29, 1922, to the late William “Vid” and Agnes Deal Debelak.

Mr. Debelak had been married for 63 years to the former Mary Jane Karski. She survives.

He retired after 35 years with Rockwell International as a job-setter.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. George was inducted Jan. 11, 1943, and honorably discharged on Dec. 18, 1945. He held the rank of technician fifth grade with the Third Army, 20th Corps.

Mr. Debelak served in the European Theater, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and World War II Victory Medal.

He was a member of VFW Post 522.

Mr. Debelak was a former and honorary member of the South New Castle Borough Volunteer Fire Department.

He was also a former member of the Croatian Club, Sponja Club and Polish National Alliance.

He enjoyed his family and loved traveling to Florida. George also enjoyed going to Pirates games and listening to polka music.

In addition to his wife, Mary Jane, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John G. and Jeannie Debelak of Mineral Ridge, Ohio; two daughters and a son-in-law, Judy and Ronald Kielar, and Deborah Debelak, all of New Castle; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Matthew Debelak and Michael Debelak; and two sisters, Anna Zeleznak and Frances Budzowski.

Visitation was yesterday at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St. The New Castle Area Veterans Honor Guard conducted military rites. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated this morning at St. Vtius Church. The Rev. John Petrarulo officiated.

Burial was in SS. Philip and James Cemetery.
