Fred Clark, 84, of Bridgeville, Pa., formerly of New Castle, was called home to be with his Lord on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, in St. Clair Hospital in Bridgeville.

Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Columbus, Ga., he was a son of the late Charles Henry and Rebecca Lizza Alexander Clark.

Fred was a graduate of New Castle High School. He was a dedicated veteran, having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a shore patrol specialist second class. He was also a major in the 62nd Engineer Battalion in Korea.

He received his undergraduate degree at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. He returned to military service in the Army from 1952 to 1955. He was retired as a major reservist having served from 1955 until 1970. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his master’s degree in social work.

Fred was married to Jimmie Mae Varner for 38 years until the time of her death in 1991.

Fred retired from the Youth Development Center in 1991 as a supervisor after 20 years of service.

Fred was a dedicated and active member of Bethel AME Church for more than 70 years until his health began to fail.

He was also a life member of the NAACP where he served as past third vice president, IBOPOE-Elks where he served as treasurer for 18 years, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the American Legion.

In addition to his parents and his wife, three brothers, Charles Henry II, Major Robert II and Louis J. Clark, preceded him in death.

Fred will be sadly missed by his children: Phyllis and Thomas Spencer of Bridgeville with whom he resided, Helena Denise Clark of New Castle, Charles Henry and Audrey Clark of Duncan, Okla., Major Robert and Kelly Clark of New Castle, John Fitzgerald and Wei Clark of Penn Hills and James Nelson and Mary Clark of New Castle; a sister, Evelyn Kaiser of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Jamie and Victor Sabino, Mesha Scott, Kadesha Clark, Patresha Clark, Arianna Miller and A.J. Clark; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Charlotte A. Sheffield Funeral Home, 454 Chestnut St. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethel AME Church. The Rev. James Harris, pastor of Greater Avery AME Church of Cleveland, will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
