Wilmington boys, girls basketball teams make playoffs

NEW CASTLE — The Wilmington High boys and girls basketball teams received good news yesterday.

District 10 awarded at-large playoff berths to the Greyhounds’ boys team and the Lady Greyhounds.

Wilmington’s boys team dropped a 51-39 decision to Sharpsville on Saturday to finish third in Region 2-AA action. But the Greyhounds (9-13) advanced to the playoffs and will play Mercyhurst Prep (20-2) at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Edinboro University.

The Lakers won the Region 5 crown, going 9-1 in league play.

The Lady Greyhounds (12-10) placed fourth in Region 2-AA. They will battle Villa Maria (18-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fairview High School.

The Lady Victors eliminated Wilmington last year (73-14) and 84-23 in 2010. Both games were in the first round of the District 10, Class AA playoffs.

Villa Maria won the Region 4 championship, posting a 14-0 mark.
