Local swimmer earns All-American recognition

NEW CASTLE — The recognition has turned national for Wilmington High swimmer Lauren Barber.

Barber was named a 2012-2013 National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Girls High School Swimming All-American in two events, the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

She is 18th overall in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.96 and 28th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.63. Both times were automatic qualifying times for All-American honors.

The top 100 swimmers in each event and gender in the country are named to the NISCA list of All-Americans.

In order for a swimmer to be considered as an All-American, he or she must compete for an interscholastic team and be scholastically eligible as determined by the state athletic association or school authority. All swimmers must be at least in the ninth grade to be eligible. Swimmers are limited to eight consecutive semesters of eligibility, meaning fifth-year seniors and seventh- and eight-grade swimmers and divers are ineligible.

Pennsylvania is ranked second in the country for the most swimming and diving All-Americans with 348, trailing only California’s 843 in that regard.

Barber swims as an independent for Wilmington and trains at the New Castle Community YMCA under the direction of head coach Anita Murphy. Barber made history earlier in the year by earning the first state gold medal in Wilmington history at the PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.63, just .08 off the PIAA record. She also grabbed a silver in the 200 freestyle.
