Wilmington schools set makeup days

NEW CASTLE — Wilmington schools will add two teacher training days to the school year in order to make up two snow days.

The action means school for students will end June 6 and  graduation also will take place that day as originally scheduled.

The Wilmington Area School District  lost six instructional days due to snow cancellations this school year.

District Superintendent Dr. Michelle Miller told the school board Monday that two of those days already were made up on Feb. 14 and 17. Two more will be made up April 21 and May 9.

Miller said she learned from a state Department of Education official that the district can use two additional Act 80 days — teacher inservice days — to make up the two remaining snow days.

Teachers instead will train on June 9, 10 and 11, even though only one inservice day was originally scheduled for June 9.

The district plans to send an “Alert-Now” call to students’ homes this week with information about the make-up schedule.

Miller also announced that starting next month, the agenda and some board documents will be available to the public on the district’s Website.

The link to “BoardDocs” will appear under the school board links the Friday before each pre-board meeting.

The next pre-board meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, and the agenda and documents are to be posted April 11. The board recently purchased the BoardDocs system to reduce paperwork and personnel time.

Also Monday, the board approved a leave of absence for elementary teacher Emily Stock from around April 4 until June 10. They also added Katelynn Gray to the elementary and special education substitute list.

Have you held or will you hold a garage/yard sale this year?

I have and it was a success! It's a great way to get rid of some junk and make a little extra pocket money.
I have, but it didn't go over so well. Better luck next time?
I haven't yet, but I plan to.
I haven't and I don't plan to. It's not for me.
