NEW CASTLE —
The Lawrence County Treasurer’s office is no longer accepting personal checks for 2012 property tax.
The office will accept cash, a money order, a cashier’s check or credit card — Visa, Mastercard or Discover.
Any property taxes not paid by Dec. 31 will be filed with the tax claim bureau and the property owner will incur additional costs.

Man charged with arson after his house burns
A Taylor Township man who allegedly doused his home with gasoline faces multiple charges of arson and assault. Jason P. Merlini, 39, of 309 Warner Alley was charged with six counts of arson, five counts of aggravated assault including one for domestic violence, one count of reckless burning and five counts of recklessly endangering another person.

‘Carelessness’ caused Overlook fire
The state fire marshal has determined a blaze at the Overlook Health and Rehabilitation Center was caused by carelessness. Trooper David Jungling issued his report Friday and said the blaze was determined to have been caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.

Two injured in Mill Street, Taylor accidents
Two people were injured in a pair of accidents Thursday, New Castle police reported. One involved a car that went over an embankment off West Pittsburg Road in Taylor Township around noon.
