Brawl results in five arrests

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police arrested five people following a weekend disturbance at Neshannock Village.

Charged were Jermaine Demar Cuffie, 19, Latrell Montel McKnight, 18; Edrina L. Williams, 40; and Charles Searcy Jr., 37, all of Neshannock Village, and Bobby Peace McKnight, 38, of Apt. 6, 606 Highland Ave.

Police were called to the apartment complex around 10:45 a.m. Saturday, where a fight among several people had broken out.

Officers learned Williams had been arguing with Searcy and was trying to get him out of her apartment.

She was screaming and yelling, despite officers’ warnings to keep her voice down, police reported. Williams continued to be unruly and caused the situation to escalate, police said. She was arrested and one of the males tried to intervene and started a fight that resulted in other arrests, officers said.

Police reported that as an officer was arresting Williams, Bobby McKnight tried to get between her and the officer and other officers pulled him away and arrested him. As an officer tried to restrain him, McKnight hit an officer in the mouth with his elbow, causing his lip to bleed, according to reports. McKnight then refused to place his hands behind his back and had to be tackled to the ground by officers and was arrested.

Police said Latrell McKnight ran onto the porch toward the officer arresting Williams, and another officer grabbed him and pushed him toward the porch railing. Latrell, who police said stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 300 pounds, was handcuffed but continued struggling with the officers.

Shenango Township police arrived to help and several officer tried to place Latrell McKnight into the back seat of a cruiser.

According to reports, he refused to get into the car and thrashed at the officers, then broke free and ran, causing one of the police to deploy a Taser at him. He fell to the ground in the grass and then was put into the cruiser.

He was taken to Ellwood City hospital to have the probe removed from his back, police said.

During the struggle with McKnight, Cuffie charged toward the officers and he was arrested, too.

Police said Searcy also tried to pull officers off someone and he, too, was taken into custody.

In addition to Shenango, Neshannock Township and state police assisted New Castle officers.

Arraignments were in the court of District Judge David B. Rishel as follows:

•Williams — disorderly conduct.

•Bobby McKnight — aggravated and simple assault, resisting arrest, obstructing justice and disorderly conduct, $10,000 bond.

•Latrell McKnight — aggravated assault, escape, simple assault, resisting arrest, obstructing justice and disorderly conduct, $10,000 bond.

•Cuffie — obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct, $10,000 bond.

•Searcy — obstruction of justice, $5,000 bond.
