Police issue fraud alert

NEW CASTLE — Neshannock Township police are urging families to stay in touch during the holiday season with a fraud alert.

Officers said a 74-year-old Graceland Road resident had been contacted earlier this month and told a family member was out of the country, in Mexico, had been arrested and needed $2,100 for bond.

When the victim realized the call was fraudulent, it was too late to stop the transaction, officers said.

The police department urges people to verify all information they receive over the phone before sending any money or valuable item.

Police remind residents that information on family members often can be easily obtained on Facebook.
