Gas smells detected on North Hill

NEW CASTLE —  New Castle’s fire department was called to a school and hospital Wednesday to investigate a gas smell.

The smell of gas was reported around 2:30 p.m. at George Washington Intermediate Elementary School and simultaneously, a sulphur-like smell was reported around Jameson Hospital, according to a police scanner report.

Joseph Anderson, principal at George Washington, said the fire department checked out the school and determined everything to be OK.

Although the building was not evacuated because of the smell, he said, the school coincidentally had conducted its first fire drill of the school year at 2 p.m.
