Man jailed for bruising child

NEW CASTLE — A South Side man is in jail for alleged physical abuse of a 3-year-old girl.

New Castle police say the child suffered extensive bruising on her face, neck and body. The matter was reported to authorities on Aug. 10.

Charges were filed Friday against 29-year-old Jeffrey David Hooks Jr. of 574 E. Long Ave.

Police said the child was with Hooks from Aug. 11 through 13. When the girl’s mother went to give her a bath on Aug. 13, she noticed bruising over the child’s body. She contacted Lawrence County Children and Youth Services around midnight Aug. 10 and got a recording that advised calling the county’s 911 center.

A New Castle officer looked at the child and saw bruising on her face, extending to her collar bone, and extensive bruising on her back end. He contacted an ambulance and a representative for Children and Youth Services.

The child was taken to Jameson Hospital, according to  reports, and a detective who later looked at her noted bruises also on her right ear, back, chest and both legs, and that she had lumps on her head. He noted some of the bruises were consistent with fingertips and squeezing.

The girl told police it was Hooks who had hurt her.

When police went to the South Side house on Long Avenue to arrest Hooks, he saw them coming and ran out the back door and into the woods, according to police. The police chased him and caught him near a church on Belmont Avenue.

Hooks was charged Friday with aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who set his jail bond at $50,000.
