Volant man dies in collapsed trench

NEW CASTLE — A man working on a trench was killed yesterday when its walls collapsed on him.

Raymond Davis, 48, of Volant died at the Plain Grove Road home he shared with his parents and his three children.

According to Richard Johnson, deputy Lawrence County coroner, Davis was helping his father dig a trench for a leach pit at the time of the accident. Johnson said Davis was attempting to shovel some dirt when a wall of the trench fell on him.

The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Johnson said Davis was buried about 10 feet deep under tons of dirt. Johnson declared him dead at 4:30 p.m. yesterday, but his body was not recovered by volunteer firemen who responded to the home until around 9 p.m.

Along with Johnson, the Pennsylvania State Police investigated the incident and determined Davis' death was accidental.

No autopsy is planned, Johnson said.

Volunteer firefighters from Scott, Neshannock and Mahoning townships were summoned to the scene. Members of Neshannock's trench rescue squad used special equipment to stabilize the trench and recover Davis' body, Johnson said.
