NEW CASTLE — A New Castle officer accidentally punctured his thumb with a needle allegedly used by a man to inject heroin.

Police were called to Darlington Park in Mahoningtown around 1 p.m. Friday for a man who was on the ground. When they arrived, the man, Charles Park Jr., 42, of 219 S. Liberty St. refused help and walked away.

Fire department personnel informed the responding officer of a hypodermic needle with suspected heroin residue that was on the grass near where Park had been lying. The officer picked up the needle to discard it and as he tried to cap it, it went through the cap and punctured his thumb.

Police said Park consented to have his blood tested for infectious diseases. At the hospital he told police the needle was his and he had used it to inject heroin.

He was released to his home and was charged Monday with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness.

He will be sent a summons to appear in court.
