Man faces drug, escape charges

NEW CASTLE — An Ohio man was placed in the Lawrence County jail on drug, escape and other charges.

Thomas Water Malutic, 53, of Lowellville was arrested by Pulaski Township police after an incident that began around 11 p.m. Friday on Route 422.

Police said they had observed a vehicle being driven erratically and after it had turned onto Route 208, officers signaled the driver to pull over, which he failed to do until turning on to Hyland Lane.

Police said when they approached the vehicle, they had detected the odor of alcohol. They also said they had observed the driver, identified as Malutic, as having bloodshot and glassy eyes, as well as slurred speech.

Officers said Malutic failed field sobriety tests. Officers handcuffed him and were about to place him in the rear of a cruiser when he ran off, police said. However, they said, he was apprehended after tripping over some steps.

Malutic was taken to Jameson Hospital for a blood test. When officers removed him from the cruiser, they said, they discovered three bags of suspected crack cocaine that later tested positive.

Police said Malutic refused to take the blood test at the hospital.

Charges against him are possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, escape, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, flight to avoid apprehension and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Malutic was arraigned by District Judge David Rishel and jailed in lieu of $5,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 3.
