Ellwood man facing rape charges

NEW CASTLE — An Ellwood City man is the Lawrence County jail for allegedly raping a woman at an apartment building.

John Andrew Mesko, 42, of 720 Lawrence Ave., faces charges of rape, sexual assault, indecent assault without the other person’s consent and unlawful restraint.

Police arrested him around 7 p.m. Sunday after a woman with whom he was visiting claimed he had raped her, then ripped the phone out of the wall when she tried to call 911.

Mesko told police she had invited him to her room at the Unicenter apartment complex.

The woman was taken to Ellwood City hospital for an examination. She told police she was afraid of Mesko from previous encounters.

He was arraigned by District Judge Scott McGrath, who set his bond at $50,000.
