Florida man arrested

NEW CASTLE — A Florida man was arrested after allegedly leading police on a pursuit through a field and an old playground.

Police said they tried to stop a white Chevrolet Impala with an Ohio plate around 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of South Ray and Court streets after it went through a stop sign.

The driver, Thomas Allen Reed, 27, of Ormond Beach, Fla., also has an address at 730 Court St. in New Castle. He allegedly accelerated and drove away from police on the city’s Lower East Side.

Police said they pursued him as he drove through a grassy field and abandoned playground, then onto a grassy hillside, onto Conner Avenue and through another intersection without stopping. He made an abrupt left turn into an alley and stopped, officers said. He then got out and ran and officers chased him on foot.

Police said they saw him enter a back porch in the 100 block of North Ray Street, where he tried to force his way in through the back door.

The officers held him at gunpoint and ordered him to get on to the ground. He complied and was arrested.

Police learned Reed was wanted on five bench warrants from the Lawrence County courts and the car he was driving had been reported stolen in Hermitage that day.

Officers said they found a digital scale on the driver’s seat of the car and a drug-sniffing canine officer indicated the presence of drugs on the driver’s side door.

The car was impounded and police obtained a search warrant and a found a glass pipe, a water pipe and a clear plastic bag containing two suspected marijuana cigarettes in the car.

Reed is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, flight to avoid apprehension, receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless driving, reckless driving, stop and yield sign violations and driving while his license is suspended or revoked.

He was arraigned Monday by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who set his bond at $5,000.
