'Canes make history with state title!

NEW CASTLE — The Perfect Storm.

That's how the 2013-14 New Castle High Red Hurricane basketball team will forever be remembered after capping an unbeaten season with a state title on Saturday.

Playing in front of a sea of red and black at the Giant Center in Hershey, the 'Canes topped La Salle College 52-39.

New Castle finished its season at 31-0.  The last WPIAL team to make it through an entire season undefeated was Sto-Rox, which finished 32-0 in 1983.

In a grind-it-out affair with the tall and talented Explorers, the 'Canes relied  on their trademark defensive pressure and timely transition buckets. In the last two minutes,  clutch foul shooting clinched the victory.

Malik Hooker led New Castle with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Drew Allen also had 13.
