Two face charges of check forgery

NEW CASTLE — Two people have been charged with forgery for allegedly depositing checks on a closed account.

New Castle police filed the charges against Corey J. Kradel, 36, of 1045 Beckford St. and Ericka Shearer, 30, of Mercer over deposits allegedly made at a local credit union.

Credit union officials contacted police after checks deposited were returned with the indication they were on a closed account. Police said they had learned the checks were from a relative of Kradel’s, who told officers neither Kradel nor Shearer had permission to cash the checks and that he had not endorsed them.

Authorities said the amount of money involved totaled nearly $3,500.

Kradel is charged with two counts each of forgery, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and bad checks. Shearer is charged with three counts each of the same charges.

Police have charged Kradel in another case involving checks from the same relative at a different credit union. The charges against him there are two counts each of forgery, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and bad checks. The amount involved was listed at $200.
