More people without jobs in county

NEW CASTLE — Lawrence County’s unemployment rate increased in January, according to the latest statistics available.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported the seasonally adjusted rate was 8.8 percent. December’s rate was 8.4 percent.

A year ago — January 2012 — the rate was 8 percent.

The rate in Pennsylvania for January was 8.2 percent and the U.S. rate was 7.9 percent.

Surrounding counties had the following rates for January: Beaver, 8.3 percent; Butler, 7.5 percent; Mercer 9.9 percent; and the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, 7.5 percent.
