Biker killed in crash

NEW CASTLE — A Lawrence County man died yesterday when his motorcycle was hit from behind in Hickory Township.

Police reported that Daniel Gallatin, 69, of Rose Point-Harlansburg Road died at the scene of the crash along Route 956.

According to Hickory Township Police Chief Michael Vitale, the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m., about a quarter-mile east of Route 168.

Vitale said Gallatin had been traveling east on Route 956 when he attempted to make a right turn into a driveway. At that point, Gallatin was hit by a sport utility vehicle traveling behind him. Vitale identified the driver of that vehicle as Laura Gargiulo, 41, of 2662 Route 956, Volant.

After impact, the motorcycle was dragged about 100 feet and pinned under the other vehicle.

Vitale said CPR was attempted, but Gallatin was dead at the scene.

After the accident, members of the Pennsylvania State Police assisted the Hickory department with the investigation of the crash, while members of the Hickory and Scott volunteer fire departments provided traffic control.

Vitale said the scene was not cleared until 7:30 p.m.

The accident and its cause are still under investigation, Vitale noted.
