NEW CASTLE —
Two people were injured in downtown New Castle when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver Monday night.
The two were walking across Jefferson Street when they were hit, shortly before 7 p.m. Their identities and conditions were not available at press time.
A vehicle, identified both as a beige sport utility vehicle and then as a gray van, was traveling north on Jefferson Street when it hit the two. The vehicle then continued north on Jefferson Street. New Castle police alerted other departments in the area to look for the vehicle, which has front-end damage.
Police and medical personnel responded and a crowd gathered. The two victims were lying in the northbound lanes of Jefferson Street about 100 feet north of North Street immediately after the accident. Emergency medical technicians and police attended to them, while other officers interviewed potential witnesses.
Both victims were taken by ambulance to Jameson Hospital. Preliminary reports indicated their injuries were not life threatening.
