Missouri man arrested for robbery

NEW CASTLE — A Missouri man wanted in Minnesota was arrested for allegedly robbing a woman during a domestic argument on Wilmington Avenue.

New Castle police charged Martez Antonio Richard, 21, of St. Louis after they were called to the 800 block regarding a man beating up a woman in the middle of the street, around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The woman told police she was getting her children ready for school when Richard started an argument with her. She said she left her house out of fear to wait for the school bus early with her children, and Richard showed up at the bus stop and punched her in the jaw and head. She told police she ran from him and he chased her across Wilmington Avenue, caught up with her and pushed her down on the street.

She said Richard repeatedly banged her head on the street and grabbed her cell phone out of her hand.

The woman told police she had been waving at passing cars, trying to get someone to stop and help her. She gave the officers his Missouri identification card, and they learned he has multiple warrants out of Minnesota with full extradition, including a warrant for armed robbery.

Police learned he went to a house in the 100 block of Edison Avenue, according to Chief Bobby Salem. The officers went there and obtained consent from the resident to search the house, and Richard was found hiding in an upstairs bedroom closet.

Richard was charged yesterday with robbery, simple assault, theft, receiving stolen property and harassment. He was arraigned by District Judge David B. Rishel and booked in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Police said he additionally will be charged with arrest prior to requisition for his out-of-state warrants.
